Quark - The Complete Series Review

Quark - The Complete Series Overview

A spoof of science fiction films and TV series, these are the adventures of Adam Quark, captain of a United Galactic Sanitation Patrol ship. His cohorts include Gene/Jean, a "transmute" with male and female characteristics; a Vegeton (a highly-evolved plant-man) named Ficus; and Andy the Android and Betty and Betty (who always argue over who's the clone of the other). Based at Space Station Perma One are Otto Palindrome and The Head. Though Quark is supposed to stick to his sanitization patrols, he and his crew often meet adventure with such colorful space denizens as the evil High Gorgon (head of the villainous Gorgons), Zoltar the Magnificent, and Zargon the Malevolent.

Quark - The Complete Series Specifications

The cancellation of Quark after a mere eight episodes makes us ponder yet again the existence of intelligent life in the television universe. Created by Buck Henry, who with Mel Brooks, sent up the spy genre with Get Smart, this quite funny 1978 series spoofs space operas like Star Trek and Star Wars. Richard Benjamin stars as Adam Quark, an "ordinary human," who commands a United Galaxy Sanitation Patrol ship. His mission: "To boldly seek out grime and grit, to collect the uncollectible space baggie, and to always leave the area cleaner than when I found it." His eccentric crew includes Ficus (Richard Kelton), a Spock-like Vegeton; Gene/Jean ("Timothy" Thomerson), a male/female "transmute"; the gorgeous, hot pantsed navigators Betty I and Betty II (Cyb and Patricia Barnstable, who gained commercial fame as the Doublemint Twins), one of which is a clone; and Andy; the cowardly robot. The hapless Quark yearns for greater adventures, but gets no votes of confidence from bureaucrat Otto Palindrome (a pre-Mork & Mindy Conrad Janis), who administers Space Station Perma One as the behest of the behemoth The Head (Alan Caillou). Proceed with warp speed past the pilot episode. The series really takes off with the second episode, "May the Source Be With You," featuring the voice of Hans Conreid as the galaxy's supposed greatest weapon, but, that, after 200 years of inaction, is a little rusty. The Force may not be entirely with the cheesy-looking Quark, but, like Mel Brooks' When Things Were Rotten, this dimly remembered curiosity rates rediscovery. May it live long and prosper on DVD. --Donald Liebenson

People's Century: Lost Peace [VHS] Review

People's Century: Lost Peace [VHS] Overview

Educational public performance rights are now available! The First World War bathed the new century in blood: Nine million lost their lives in a merciless war of attrition. A whole generation was traumatized by the horror of the trenches—and vowed that war would be a thing of the past.

Lost Peace revisits the popular hopes and experience in the years following World War I—and the looming threat of a new nationalism: despite Woodrow Wilson's promise of a "people's peace," old prejudices refused to die and nationalist passions again began to rise. Defeated nations were left out in the cold, resentful and unreconciled. Fascism and militarism spread while pacifist movements fought an increasingly unsuccessful rearguard action to preserve the dream of peace. By the late 1930s, people had to choose between avoiding war at all costs, or talking up arms to resist aggression. Fifty-five million lives were about to be lost in a second world war.

The people remember: Woodrow Wilson and the League of Nations, Yankee isolationism, German reparations, American volunteers fight the Spanish Civil War, invasions by Mussolini and Hitler.

People's Century: Lost Peace [VHS] Specifications

World War I bathed the new century in blood. Nine million lives were lost during four years of the worst slaughter the world had ever seen. A generation was traumatized by the horror of the trenches, and the world's leaders vowed that peace was here to stay.

Spanning the years 1919 to 1936, this compelling episode of the Emmy Award-winning People's Century series chronicles how the elation following the cease fire ("the prettiest piece of paper I ever saw," states one American soldier) inexorably dissolved as the world rearmed itself for a war that would claim the lives of 55 million.

The narrative of the failure of the League of Nations to stop the rise of fascism is interwoven with the memories of a diverse group of eyewitnesses from around the world. Recalling the United States' retreat into isolationism, one American soldier remembers returning to his farm after the war. "We wasn't interested in any foreign countries," he states. "We was interested in our own selves and home."

We experience the springtime of hope that greeted the birth of such new nations as Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia. One Czech woman recalls her mother weeping, "We have freedom."

But it was short-lived. In 1935 Italy defied the League of Nations and invaded Ethiopia. Germany annexed Austria. Japan conquered Manchuria. The storm clouds of war were on the horizon, and the world once again raced to arm itself. "I would never have thought that we would be stupid enough to go to war again," remarks a former French soldier. "I never thought I would be called again 20 years later." --Donald Liebenson

The Lost Tomb of Jesus Review

The Lost Tomb of Jesus Overview

Has the tomb of Jesus Christ been found? With the help of archaeologists, DNA analysts, biblical scholars and statisticians, join Academy award-winning filmmaker, James Cameron as he follows the trail of clues that could lead to the greatest discovery of all time. This gripping two-hour special sheds new light on the story of one very well-known family.

This forensic investigation takes you on a journey to find what could be the most coveted tomb in history. In 1980, archaeologists from the Israeli Antiquities Authority excavated a tomb containing ten ossuaries with the bones of what could have been one family. Among these lime-stone boxes, several inscriptions were found with unbelievable biblically connected names including 'Jesus, son of Joseph,' two 'Mary's,' and 'Judah, son of Jesus.'

This unprecedented documentary includes dramatic recreations, based on the latest historical evidence, illustrating accurate images of Jesus of Nazareth, his family, his followers, his ministry, his crucifixion and his entombment.

Part archaeological adventure, part Biblical history, part forensic science, part theological controversy - this is a story that will be carried around the world.

Third Watch: The Complete Second Season Overview

Sometimes it seems as if the world is crashing in on itself. It’s the job of the first responders to hold it together. Police, firefighters, paramedics: The men and women of the 3-11 PM shift called third watch are ready to serve in situations ranging from small (attending to a frequent 9-1-1 dialer) to playful (a football match between fire departments) to harrowingly large and complex (tracking an elusive sniper who targets cops). The original team of heroes returns and an FDNY newcomer joins them in a 22-episode Season Two that combines the rigors of duty with compelling vignettes of life away from work. What kind of person defies a gun-wielding madman or rushes into a burning building? This kind – the people of Third Watch.

Third Watch: The Complete Second Season Specifications

Third Watch: The Complete Second Season continues the critically acclaimed television drama's unique approach to character-driven storylines within a fluid if somewhat familiar milieu. Almost anticipating the now-legendary heroism of New York City's police and rescue workers on September 11, 2001, these early episodes of Third Watch (the series began in 1999) concern the daily partnership and shared risks between New York cops, firefighters, and paramedics as they attempt to keep people alive in the midst of random chaos. While television shows about public servants are nothing new, what makes Third Watch both different and engrossing is the way creators John Wells (ER) and Edward Allen Bernero (Criminal Minds) hone in on one or two characters in each episode, relegating the rest of the cast to minor supporting roles. Thus, an individual who stands out in one episode for his or her efforts to do the job well--despite real-world pressures, lapses in judgment, and moral uncertainty--might appear only briefly, and perhaps less sympathetically, in another episode as seen from a different character's perspective.

That kind of revolving focus not only keeps Third Watch constantly fresh, it embraces master filmmaker Jean Renoir's famous observation (paraphrased here) that each of us has a reason for being who we are and doing what we do. Beyond its success at turning such an expansive spirit into appealing drama, Third Watch is also noteworthy for superb writing (much of it by Wells), harrowing set pieces, production values that stress an original, signature look, and a strong emphasis on relationships between on-the-job partners. The cast remains superb, particularly Jason Wiles as an immature, cynical, yet oddly effective young cop, Molly Price as his beleaguered but dedicated partner, and Skipp Sudduth as a veteran police officer whose leadership on the streets belies his rudderless off-duty existence. Among some truly memorable episodes in The Complete Second Season are "Four Days," in which one of the program's most stable characters, African-American paramedic "Doc" Parker (Michael Beach), slowly comes unglued by his growing perception of institutional racism, and season finale "…and Zeus Wept," a nightmarish thriller about a school shooting. --Tom Keogh

Sol Bianca - The Legacy #1: Lost Treasures Overview

The all-girl crew of the pirate ship Sol Bianca is not afraid of anyone, so when they cross paths with the most powerfully armed power in the known universe, it is sure to be a wild ride!

Sol Bianca - The Legacy #1: Lost Treasures Specifications

The adventures of the rambunctious space pirates of the spacecraft Sol Bianca continue with the first two episodes in the new story line, The Legacy. In "Emblem," Captain April and her unruly crew set out to recover a rare Frontier Age flintlock stolen from her years before. They find it at an auction on a distant planet, and snatch it from the grasp of the sinister Gyunter of the Terra Force. In "Memories," Gyunter and brash Lieutenant Ranny pursue the Sol Bianca to the ruined planet Consegra. Jun and Mayo find themselves in a deadly maze, more or less inspired by Dante's Divine Comedy, but navigate it with the aid of Sancho, a genie/graphic interface that Jun keeps in a ring. The writing is spotty, with adventures ending before they really get started. The viewer never sees crew members Jun and Mayo escape from the maze; they just turn up at the end of the episode. Fans of these outrageous female pirates probably won't care about these shortcomings, though, because director Hiroyuki Ochi and writer Hideki Mitsui give them plenty of fast-paced battles, wisecracks, sky chases, and explosions. (Ages 11 and older due to violence and occasional profanity) --Charles Solomon

DuckTales - Volume 2 Specifications

Scrooge McDuck may be a spendthrift who's devoted to the pursuit of riches, but it turns out that he's also an adventurous, worldly duck who can occasionally be almost compassionate when it comes to his family. In the five-episode pilot "Treasure of the Golden Suns," Donald Duck enlists in the Navy and puts his three nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie in the care of the miserly Uncle Scrooge. Scrooge and his nephews balk at the arrangement, but the nephews soon earn their Uncle's grudging respect when they help retrieve an antique wooden boat that's stolen from Scrooge's museum. The wooden boat leads Scrooge and the boys to the deserts of South America and the ice floes of Antarctica in search of a treasure bigger than even Scrooge can imagine. Thus begins the 1987 adventure series in which Scrooge and his nephews travel the globe, from the Wild West to Texas to ancient archeological sites around the world, in search of ever-increasing wealth. Villains like El Capitan, Magica De Spell and the Beagle Boys, rivals like Flinthead Glomgold and J.R. Mooing, and allies like Launchpad McQuack, Governess Beakley and her granddaughter Webbigail figure prominently throughout the ducks' nineteen adventures. Scrooge, Huey, Dewey, and Louie grow and mature as a result of their adventures, realizing time and again that friendship is the most valuable treasure of all. (Ages 5 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

FOR LOVE OR COUNTRY:ARTURO SANDOVAL - DVD Movie

For Love or Country - The Arturo Sandoval Story Specifications

For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story chronicles the life of a man torn between his home and his devotion to his music. In a Golden Globe-nominated performance, Andy Garcia portrays the gregarious, passionate, and obstinate Arturo Sandoval, the Grammy-winning Cuban trumpet player.

This HBO film shows how Sandoval's life in revolutionary Cuba is affected--beginning in the early 1970s--by his zeal for his music and by the limits placed on him by his homeland. Representing his torn loyalties are Dizzy Gillespie (the enigmatic jazz musician played by Charles S. Dutton) and Sandoval's wife, Marianela (played by the beautiful Mia Maestro). Gillespie embodies the freedom to follow one's dream, while Marianela represents family loyalty and the ideals of the Castro revolution. Yet, the same regime his wife embraces forces Arturo to play government-imposed music instead of the jazz that he loves. Sandoval travels the world, and while the Cuban government profits from his success, he is exposed to a freedom that eventually draws him to the difficult and life-changing decision he and his family feel compelled to make.

Against a backdrop of beautiful scenery and exceptional music, For Love or Country provides a harsh depiction of revolutionary Cuba, its outmoded lifestyle, and the restrictions placed on its people. --Mindy Ruehmann

Arthur: Arthur's Lost Library Book Overview

Marc Brown's fine fellow of an 8-year-old aardvark, Arthur, loses a library book (the latest story from the Scare-Your-Pants-Off series), and he searches and searches everywhere for it. Mystified by its disappearance, Arthur does what any child his age might do in this situation: wonder if the scary book walked off somehow by itself. Broadway's Lost Treasures Collection (Broadway's Lost Treasures 1-3 & The Best of the Tony Awards - The Plays) Review

Broadway's Lost Treasures Collection (Broadway's Lost Treasures 1-3 & The Best of the Tony Awards - The Plays) Overview

A comprehensive collection of great performances captured on film as part of the annual Tony Award® broadcasts. Broadway royalty and Tony® winners, including Lauren Bacall, Bebe Neuwirth, Robert Goulet, and Harvey Fierstein, serve as hosts and share their own Broadway and Tony® memories.

Produced as PBS specials, Broadway’s Lost Treasures I, II, & III feature legendary stars—including Patti LuPone, Nell Carter, Jerry Orbach, Gwen Verdon, Ethel Merman, Kristin Chenoweth, Angela Lansbury, Joel Grey, and many more—performing musical numbers from legendary shows—including Anything Goes, Man of La Mancha, Guys and Dolls, Ain’t Misbehavin’, Chicago, Fosse, Miss Saigon, Crazy for You, and many many more.

The Best of the Tony® Awards–The Plays features acting greats, such as James Earl Jones, Maggie Smith, Annette Benning, Kevin Kline, and Morgan Freeman, performing key scenes from 19 celebrated plays, including The Great White Hope, The Heidi Chronicles, Fences, Hamlet, and Long Day’s Journey Into Night.

For theatre lovers, it doesn’t get any better than this!

Broadway's Lost Treasures Collection (Broadway's Lost Treasures 1-3 & The Best of the Tony Awards - The Plays) Specifications

The Broadway's Lost Treasures Collection consists of the three volumes previously released on DVD plus a never-before-available fourth disc, The Best of the Tony Awards: The Plays. The first three discs deliver what the title promises: historic performances of great moments in American musical theater televised on the Tony Awards starting in the 1960s and into the new millennium. Unlike some other arts, theater has rarely been well-documented, so it's a treat to see these numbers performed by the original artists rather than experience them through audio recordings or tepid movie adaptations. Sure, sound and picture quality are only adequate, some of the numbers are minimally staged and some appear to be lip-synched, and some of the performances that do have excellent film counterparts seem rather lackluster here. But those are minor drawbacks compared to the chance to see Gwen Verdon performing "All That Jazz" and "Nowadays" from Chicago and "Whatever Lola Wants" from Damn Yankees; John Raitt singing The Pajama Game's "Hey There"; Alfred Drake singing Kiss Me Kate's "Where Is the Life That Late I Led"); a 33-year-old Jerry Orbach performing Promises, Promises' "She Likes Basketball"; and 12-year-old Andrea McArdle breaking hearts in Annie's "Tomorrow."

The second and third volumes feature newer, fully staged performances that are almost indistinguishable from an actual show, including scenes from splashy, high-energy revivals such as Anything Goes (Patti LuPone and company performing the title tune) and Guys and Dolls (the fabulous "Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat"), and new shows such as Grand Hotel (Michael Jeter and Brent Barrett in a gloriously exuberant "Take a Glass Together"), Les Miserables ("One Day More"), La Cage aux Folles (George Hearn solo and with a chorus line in drag in "I Am What I Am"), Ragtime (the opening number), and You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown (Kristin Chenoweth's "My New Philosophy"). The new generation of splashy dance-oriented musicals are also represented by the likes of the 42nd Street revival (the title tune and "We're in the Money"), Fosse ("Sing, Sing, Sing"), and Crazy for You ("I Can't Be Bothered Now").

The Best of the Tony Awards: The Plays features 19 of the dramatic and comedy excerpts showcased on the Tony Awards telecasts between 1969 and 2001. From 1969 are James Earl Jones and Jane Alexander in The Great White Hope and Art Carney in Lovers, and other performances include Maggie Smith and Margaret Tyzack in Lettice and Lovage (1990), John Lithgow and B.D. Wong in M. Butterfly (1988), Joan Allen and Peter Friedman in The Heidi Chronicles (1988), and Joe Mantegna and Ron Silver in Speed-the-Plow (1988). The performances aren't specifically organized by date or performer, but the collection concludes with four excerpts from August Wilson works followed by three Shakespearean works. The excerpts are brief, lasting 2-3 minutes each, and even though each segment is introduced by a narrator, this format clearly works better for musicals than it does for plays. Regardless, it remains a rare chance to see stage performances that for the most part are not available on home video. Collectors who already own the three musical volumes, however, will have to weigh how badly they want The Plays when they consider mostly duplicating their purchase with the Broadway's Lost Treasures Collection. --David Horiuchi

Check Out The Honeymooners - Classic 39 Episodes for $24.73

The Honeymooners - Classic 39 Episodes Review

The Honeymooners - Classic 39 Episodes Overview

HONEYMOONERS:CLASSIC 39 EPISODES - DVD Movie

The Honeymooners - Classic 39 Episodes Specifications

Get the bag. As The Honeymooners continues to get bumped from late-night TV schedules across the nation--by laughably unfunny shows such as Friends and Murphy Brown no less--legions of Honeymoonies will need to get their fix in other ways. This set--the Honeymoonie's Holy Grail--contains all 39 episodes from the legendary 1955-1956 season. There's no commentary from some "expert" who compares Ralph to gods from Greek mythology or memories from some assistant producer--it's just the meat, and that's enough to make any fan salivate. This was the only season that The Honeymooners had a life of its own apart from the Jackie Gleason Show, and as much as we tried to welcome the "Lost Episodes" into our family, they very rarely matched the high quality of the classic 39. Rather than sequence them in order, the producers have decided to group them by eight different themes including Ralph's jealous nature, his life at the Gotham Bus Company, his friendship with Norton, domestic troubles, and financial woes. Sometimes this approach is a bit forced, but it does illustrate why The Honeymooners is the ultimate situation comedy: You can show them out of order. No matter what happens to the Bensonhurst foursome, Ralph will still work for the bus company, Norton in the sewer. They'll be struggling to get by, passing the time bowling, shooting pool, arguing with the wives, and dreaming of a better day. And it's in the mundanity of everyday life that The Honeymooners finds boundless humor. Even when the events were anything but mundane--bank robbers, counterfeiters, TV commercials, game shows, golf dates with The Boss--the real story and the best jokes were about the reality of their lives and the realization that, because of marriage and friendship, they didn't really have it so bad after all. The chemistry between Jackie Gleason and Art Carney still amazes after all these years. Audrey Meadows's Alice is the perfect foil for Ralph, stern but sympathetic. And Joyce Randolph's Trixie? Well, let's just call her "earnest." Still, for all of Norton's frenetic energy and Alice's wisdom, the show belongs to Ralph Kramden. Somehow, Gleason took a chauvinistic, paranoid, insensitive, scheming, bitter, loudmouth, underachieving bus driver and made him a hero to millions. --Marc Greilsamer

The vaults have been re-opened as we present another round of TV pilots so outrageous and controversial that TV networks wouldn’t dare air them. In Volume 2, a series of comedians introduce 10 different pilots that thankfully never made it to air. It includes more unearthed footage from returning favorites The Amazing Racist and Money, plus new gems like Midget Wars, Dumpster Dinner and Beer Goggles.
